How to read the chart and heatmap, and what OI means next to volume and funding.
Open interest (OI) is the total notional size of all open perpetual contracts that have not been closed or delivered. Unlike spot volume, it measures outstanding positions, not trades. Each contract has a buyer and a seller, but OI counts that position once at the aggregate level.
Volume sums how much traded in a period (every buy and sell adds to the tally). Open interest changes only when net new positions are opened or closed. You can have high volume with flat OI if traders are mostly closing and reopening among themselves, or rising OI when new risk is entering the market.
OI helps describe whether moves are driven by new positioning or liquidation of existing positions. Rising price with rising OI often reads as new longs adding; falling price with rising OI can indicate new shorts. It is one input among many—use it with price, funding, and liquidity, not as a signal on its own.

Venues report OI with different latency and definitions. We normalize where possible, but cross-exchange comparisons are approximate. Use the table to compare relative size and trends, not as a substitute for an exchange’s own dashboard for risk limits.
