How perp volume relates to open interest, and how to use the chart and heatmap together.
Perpetual volume is the total notional value of perpetual contract trades over a period (buys and sells both count toward traded volume). It measures how actively a market is trading, not how large outstanding positions are—that is open interest.
High volume means many contracts changed hands; open interest measures how much net exposure remains open. A session can show huge volume but flat OI if traders mostly close and replace positions intraday, or volume and OI can rise together when new positions accumulate.
Volume share hints at where liquidity and attention sit for a given asset. It is useful for execution and for context alongside OI and funding, especially when venues report at different times or with different contract specs.
