Perpetual funding rates
How funding works, how bps and APY relate, and how to use the explorer.
What is a perpetual funding rate?
Perpetual swaps use a periodic payment between longs and shorts so the contract price tracks the spot index. A positive rate means longs pay shorts; negative means shorts pay longs. Rates are usually quoted every 1h or 8h depending on the venue, then annualized (e.g. APY) for comparison.
What is the difference between bps and APY on this chart?
The underlying data is stored in basis points (bps) per funding interval. APY is a derived annualized figure for intuition. Toggle the unit to match how you think about carry—short-term traders often use bps; longer holders often use APY.
How do I read the heatmap table?
Each row is a timestamp and each column is an exchange. The green intensity scales with the absolute size of the rate in that row: the largest magnitude in the row gets the strongest tint, and smaller values are lighter. Zeros or missing prints read as neutral.
Why do exchanges show different funding at the same time?
Each venue has its own index, premium calculation, and caps. Spreads are normal. Use the chart to see trends and the table to compare who is most long- or short-paying at each point in time.
Is historical funding a prediction of future funding?
No. Past rates describe what happened under prior positioning and volatility. Funding can change quickly when open interest, spot price, and leverage shift. Treat this as context, not a signal by itself.
